Mississippi Accident Leaves One Woman In Jackson Hospital With Life-Threatening Injuries

On Behalf of | Jul 1, 2013 | Personal Injury

A woman in Wayside, MS was airlifted to a hospital in Jackson after suffering life-threatening injuries in a two-car accident. According to Mississippi Highway Patrol officials, the woman, Louise Young was involved in an accident on Mississippi 1 South.

Authorities say that the accident happened a little after 4 p.m. when Young’s 1998 Pontiac Sunfire was hit by a 2012 GMC SUV driven by a Greenville, MS resident Joshphyln Ware. Authorities say the extent of Young’s injuries were such that emergency responders decided to airlift the woman to Jackson. Ware was also injured in the accident and is seeking treatment in a local hospital.

Authorities say they do not yet know the cause of the terrible accident and that they are working to reconstruct the events that led to the collision before deciding on whether any charges will be filed. Though it’s unclear what might have led to the accident, authorities say they don’t believe alcohol or drugs were involved.

Given the time of day of the accident and the fact that police do not believe drugs or alcohol were involved, it makes sense to wonder whether one of the drivers may have been distracted prior to the crash. Police say they will investigate all possibilities, but a recent study revealed that cellphones are not the only things authorities should pay attention to.

The study, conducted by the Erie Insurance Group, discovered that out of the nearly 65,000 people who have been killed in car accidents over the past two years, 10 percent died in crashes caused by distracted driving. While most people automatically assume this means that the drivers were on their cellphones, the fact is it could be one of a multitude of distractions. The survey found that of all the possible causes of distraction behind the wheel, the deadliest appeared to be… wait for it… daydreaming.

According to the study’s authors, 62 percent of all fatal distracted driving accidents that take place in the United States each year are the result of daydreaming or being lost in thought. The second biggest cause is, perhaps unsurprisingly, cellphone usage, which accounts for 12 percent of such accidents. After that, researchers say rubbernecking, other occupants in the vehicle and reaching for something in the car are the other major causes of distracted driving fatalities.

While the data may be misconstrued to say that cellphone use while driving is not that dangerous, researchers say the exact opposite is true. Cellphone use while driving is very dangerous and is likely responsible for thousands of deaths each year, however, not having your attention focused on the road is even more deadly. Mississippi drivers need to make a concerted effort to devote 100 percent of their energy on driving safely and keeping an eye out for others. Though there are a million possible distractions, nothing is worth the risk of being involved in a serious Mississippi car accident.
