Icy Roads Lead To Several Deadly Crashes Across Mississippi

A woman is dead and two others are seriously injured following an accident in Smith County, MS involving a tractor-trailer. Emergency officials say the accident happened on snow covered local roads and led to the death of a passenger in a 1992 Toyota pickup truck.

Mississippi Highway Patrol officials say that the accident occurred when an 18-wheeler stalled on a patch of ice while driving along Highway 18. The semi then collided with the Toyota pickup truck that was heading the opposite direction down Highway 18. Officials say they blame the ice on the accident, one of several deadly crashes that have occurred in Mississippi in the past few months due to winter weather.

The driver of the Toyota was seriously injured, as was a 19-month-old child in the car. Both were taken to the University of Mississippi Medical Center for treatment. Sadly, the female passenger suffered severe injuries and died at the scene of the terrible wreck.

The Smith County wreck was one of several to occur over the past few weeks across the state that were linked to icy weather. In another accident on I-20 near Vicksburg, four tractor-trailers crashed into one another after skidding on a patch of ice. The accident occurred after snow and ice fell in the area and trucks lost control on an icy bridge over the Mississippi River.

Five tractor-trailers lost control and collided with one another in a Simpson County accident on I-65 that is also believed to have been caused by ice. According to Mississippi Highway Patrol officials, at least two other traffic fatalities occurred across the state due to weather. In one, a man from Carrollton died in a one-car crash along Mississippi Highway 35 in Carroll County. The ice led a man’s car to slip off the road and roll several times.

Finally, a woman died in Lowndes County after her Jeep Wrangler skidded while crossing an icy bridge. The Jeep then slipped off the road and overturned into an embankment.

Each case is a tragedy for the families of those injured or killed in winter weather-related crashes. All should serve as very sad reminders to others out and about on Mississippi roadways of the importance of being especially vigilant during cold conditions. Even when roads appear to be fine, taking the time to slow down and drive cautiously could very well save your life.
