As the headlines continue to blare new details of the Volkswagen emissions recall, it can be confusing if you’re a VW owner to know what to make of all the details. VW owners likely have a million questions running through their heads: What exactly happened? How are you impacted? What does the recall mean for you? What do you do next? First, what models are included in the potential recall?
Globally, experts believe as many as 11 million vehicles have been sold with the deceptive emissions control system. In the U.S., that number totals just under 500,000. The cars were sold since 2008 and come with a 2.0-liter diesel engine. The impacted models are:
VW Jetta – 2009-2015 VW Beetle – 2012-2015 VW Golf – 2010-2015 VW Passat – 2012-2015 Audi A3 – 2010-2015
What’s the problem?
The issue in this case involves certain emissions testing requirements and how the VW engines were able to detect whether they were being tested in artificial conditions or were instead driving down an actual road. When being tested, a sophisticated software algorithm would lower the emission of a dangerous pollutant, nitrogen oxides, to legally acceptable levels. However, once the vehicle believed the testing was complete and the vehicle was driving, these nitrogen oxide levels would spike dramatically, up to 40 times the levels detected under testing conditions.
Are the cars safe to drive?
Yes. There is no indication the deceptive emissions software has impacted the safety of the vehicles. Regulators are currently saying that all impacted VW models are safe and legal to drive. As a result, unlike some recent automotive recalls where safety was a concern, no immediate action needs to be taken by drivers.
What happens next?
For now, consumers need to wait to be notified that their vehicle is affected. VW is working on preparing a software fix that will correct the problem they created. Most people believe the software fix will relatively quickly resolve the issue with newer model cars. However, it may take time to address the problem in older model VWs as they have different diesel systems. The good news is that the recall and repair will be performed at absolutely no cost to owners.
